Chelsea
Born in Slough on 3 August 1989, Hutchinson is a right-back or centre-back who has been with the club since the age of seven, it was announced at the beginning of December 2011 that Sam had signed a new one-and-a-half-year contract.

It was very good news given he had retired from professional football in August 2010 due to a chronic knee injury.

Following that retirement Sam remained working in Chelsea's Academy while studying for coaching qualifications and after a period of rest, a notable improvement in his condition was noted. He began the 2011/12 season testing his fitness by playing for the reserve team until the decision was taken that he could resume as a professional, remaining with the reserves squad while he builds-up his training intensity.

Sam made his first team debut as a substitute against Everton in the final league game of the 2006/07 season. He was then part of the first team pre-season visit to the United States that followed, ex-manager José Mourinho speaking about him as a future member of the Chelsea squad.

However after just five reserve games in 2007/08, injury brought the season to a halt. Further time on the sidelines was required in the middle section of the 2008/09 season, limiting Sam to six reserve league games.

The early signs were good in the 2009/10 season after another successful pre-season tour in the US with the first team. Sam played well as a sub against Fulham in a Premier League game in August 2009 and then started his first match against QPR in the Carling Cup. That was immediately followed by a first call into the England Under 21 squad although he didn't play. He previously was capped at Under 18 and Under 19 levels.

However Sam did not appear for the Chelsea first team again until the following April when he came on as a sub and crossed for Frank Lampard to score in a 7-0 home win against Stoke. A back injured in that short appearance curtailed plans for further minutes on the pitch that season and then a further set back with his knees (which had previously undergone surgery and expert consultation in the United States) at the start of the next campaign precipitated the retirement announcement, now happily reversed.

Sam has resumed his previous role as reserve team captain and was named on the first team bench for the first time since his return on New Year's Eve 2011.

Finishing the season on a positive note, he came on as a late substitute in the 6-1 win against Queens Park Rangers at Stamford Bridge in April, before starting against Blackburn Rovers on the final day of the campaign.

A few days prior to the start of the 2012/13 season, the decision was taken for Hutchinson to join Nottingham Forest on a season-long loan deal.

He made his debut as a late substitute in a 1-1 draw against Huddersfield Town, and scored the winning goal in Forest's 2-1 win over Charlton a few weeks later.

After an injury saw him return to Stamford Bridge for treatment, Hutchinson headed back to Nottingham in February.
