Success for Foundation’s Futsal teams

While the Premier League season has come to an end, the action for the Chelsea Foundation Futsal programme continues with a host of teams achieving tournament success.

The Foundation recently held an Under-10 futsal tournament at Sevenoaks School with the winning team getting the opportunity to represent Chelsea FC Foundation in the FA Youth Futsal Cup qualifiers in Nottingham.

A tense and keenly contested final between Sussex and Surrey took place with Surrey coming out on top, and they continued their impressive form throughout the regional qualifiers at the University of Nottingham Futsal Club.

They faced Nottingham Futsal Club, Birmingham Futsal Club and Helvecia Futsal Club youth academies, and despite this only being the second time they had played futsal together, Surrey went unbeaten and were crowned winners of the tournament.

They will now represent the Chelsea FC Foundation Futsal Club in the FA Youth Futsal Cup National Finals in Birmingham on Sunday 24 June.

Futsal development coordinator James Phillips said: ‘The Under-10 squad qualifying for the national finals is incredible!

‘Given that this is their first foray into the world of futsal together, the way that they have taken to the game is fantastic to see.

He added: ‘Futsal really tests player’s technical and tactical aspects of their game, and tournament victories provide evidence that the Futsal programme is going from strength to strength.

‘The successes that we are having this season really highlight not only how many opportunities futsal is bringing to the Foundation, but also how much hard work that coaches and players are putting into sessions.’

That wasn’t the only piece of success with the Under-13 Chelsea FC Foundation Futsal squad from St Joseph’s College winning all their groups games at the EFL Under-13 Joy of Moving Futsal Cup to set up a final with Queens Park Rangers.

An emphatic 8-1 victory meant it was Chelsea who booked their place at the National Finals at Derby Arena on Wednesday 13 June.

Following a sudden-death penalty victory over Southend United at the EFL Under-15 Joy of Moving Futsal Cup, the Under-15 Chelsea FC Foundation Futsal squad also got the opportunity to take part in the National Finals.

However, it would be cup heartbreak for the Blues as they suffered a semi-final defeat to Doncaster Rovers.
