Les Bleus call up Chelsea pair

Didier Deschamps’ 23-man French squad for the forthcoming World Cup includes the names of N’Golo Kante and Olivier Giroud.

Kante, recently named Chelsea’s Player of the Year, will head to Russia hoping to help his nation lift the World Cup two decades on from their maiden and to date only triumph in the competition.

Giroud is selected as one of Deschamps’ strikers having featured regularly in qualifying and scored four goals as France topped their group. This will be his fourth major tournament appearance for Les Bleus, and overall he has 30 goals in 71 appearances to his name, including one strike against Switzerland at the 2014 World Cup.

Kurt Zouma is one of 11 players on Deschamps’ stand-by list.

France, losing finalists at Euro 2016, are one of the favourites for the tournament. Their group contains Australia, Peru and Denmark. They start with a game against the Socceroos in Kazan on 16 June.
