Ladies reaction: Eriksson relishes Wembley chance

Magda Eriksson looks back at a solid defensive effort and her important assist in Chelsea Ladies Women’s FA Cup semi-final win over Manchester City…

Sunday’s match was the fourth meeting between the sides in 2018 and our Swedish defender had yet to taste victory against the club we are challenging for honours both domestically and in Europe.

That all changed, however, thanks to two goals from Fran Kirby which booked our place in the final at Wembley Stadium next month – and the first of her brace came from a long pass upfield by Eriksson.

‘I know Fran’s always on the line ready to run, which is really good,’ said the 24-year-old. ‘It’s a really nice option to have. She fought well for the ball and scored; Fran’s been exceptional this year, she’s such a good goalscorer.

‘We had a tough game, but we expected it. We’ve had some player losses and the team was so strong to pull together and still win. I thought we did well at limiting the clear-cut chances for them.

‘If someone has a bad day, someone else steps up to play really well – like Erin Cuthbert coming in for Ramona Bachmann and playing a really good game as well. It’s so amazing to have a squad with so many good players.’

The Blues will now face Arsenal in the final at Wembley Stadium, a game which takes place on Saturday 5 May – and that carrot was enough to ensure the upcoming Champions League double-headers versus Wolfsburg was not a distraction.

‘Playing at Wembley has been one of my big dreams and one of the club’s goals for the season, so the Champions League was not on our mind on Sunday,’ concluded Eriksson.
