Drew Spence visits College programme

Drew Spence was the surprise guest as the final round of trials for the new Chelsea Foundation Women’s Football College Academy, in association with West London College, took place last week.
Beginning in September 2017, the new Academy will combine full-time football training with vocational qualifications for female students aged 16 to 18, providing a professional environment for them to reach their full potential while working towards a nationally recognised academic qualification.
Following June’s launch the Foundation have been hosting trials for those interested in signing up for the course with Chelsea Ladies midfielder Drew Spence popping along to Battersea Park to cast her eye over those in attendance last Thursday.
Spence, who signed for Chelsea in 2008 and has since gone on to win the Double in 2015 and Spring Series earlier this year with the Blues, came through a similar programme and the 24-year-old believes the new Academy is the perfect place for budding young female footballers to thrive.
She said: ‘I benefitted from a Chelsea Foundation run Academy at Merrist Wood College when I was at the start of my career which proves that these types of courses really can help you develop and give you the possibility of achieving a career in the women’s game.
‘The mix of playing football and being in the classroom perfectly suited my needs and I’ve no doubt the girls here today will benefit from attending the programme.
‘It was a pleasure to come down and see the high quality of football played by the girls, they were very impressive.’
The Academy will give young women the opportunity to pursue their footballing dreams while getting a wider understanding of sport and exercise science, and the great career opportunities the industry offers. Coaching qualifications and possible employment with the Foundation are also options for those girls who wish to pursue such a career.
West London College sport academy and development co-ordinator Alex Walburn added: ‘I can’t wait for the programme to kick off, the standard across all the trials has been excellent and the opportunities when working alongside the Chelsea Foundation are a very exciting prospect for both staff and students.
‘It was amazing that Drew was able to take time out of her busy schedule to visit us today and what a great role model she is for the girls.’
Places are still available for the September intake. For more information regarding upcoming trials for the programme, contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
