Calling the Shots: Ruben Loftus-Cheek
feature Wed 22 Mar 2017
Ruben Loftus-Cheek is the latest member of the squad to talk us through a selection of posts from his personal Instagram account.
The midfielder includes moments with friends and family, as well as some big occasions on the pitch.
This was at the NBA at the O2 recently, we got invited down and it was a great experience, a few of the players went along. It was my first basketball game and I really enjoyed it, the Denver Nuggets were playing Indiana Pacers. I’d definitely go again, I’d love to go and watch a game in America. Saido Berahino is in the picture with myself, Nathaniel and Ola. He’s a friend of mine from England Under-21s and we saw a few other players there as well. It was a great night.
This was last Boxing Day at my house, I remember getting back from our match against Bournemouth and we had lots of people round for a bit of a party. A couple of my cousins are in this shot and the rest of them are just friends, I always enjoy spending time with them, especially at Christmas.
This was my first Chelsea goal and it came in the FA Cup against Scunthorpe at Stamford Bridge. Willian didn’t realise it was my first goal so when I told him he was really pleased for me. This is a big picture for me. Funnily enough it was Cesar Azpilicueta who put in the cross for this goal, and he also crossed for me to score my first Premier League goal against Aston Villa last season. They were actually very similar goals.
This was taken in Marbella. I usually go there every summer, I really like it there, I think this was two years ago. We tried fitting three of us on the jet-ski, it can normally handle that but because of the way we were getting on it just wouldn’t work. One of my friends ended up falling in and getting stung by a jellyfish, but apart from that it was an enjoyable day.
This was my first Champions League start, at home to Maccabi Tel Aviv, and I remember being pleased with my performance. I’d had a taste of European football from coming on against Sporting Lisbon, which was my debut, but to make my first start in the competition, especially under the lights at Stamford Bridge, was special for me. We won the game 4-0 as well so that made it even better.
This was one of my earliest appearances for the Under-21s, we’re flying to Norway for a game in this picture. At this point it was quite a new squad so we just thought we’d pose for a photo on the plane. It’s always nice to go away with the Under-21s because we’re all around the same age and we all get on well. You can see Nathaniel in this picture and Dele Alli was also part of the Under-21 squad back then.
I posted this after Frank Lampard announced his retirement recently. Obviously he did so much for Chelsea and England, he was such a great player, so I just wanted to post a little tribute. When he was here I was lucky enough to train with the first team quite a few times so I watched him closely because we played in the same position. He’s a massive icon for English football and it was brilliant to be able to learn from him.
