David Luiz: We meet at last
Inside Blue Mon 17 Jul 2017
David Luiz is excited at the prospect of travelling to Asia with Chelsea and getting a chance to meet our growing number of fans in the region.
The defender missed out on our visits to that continent in 2011 and 2013, due to commitments with the Brazilian national team, but has played there several times during his career and knows all about the support he and Chelsea can expect when we head to China and Singapore for pre-season this summer.
'I love to be there because the fans show a lot of their love when we come out to play,’ said David Luiz.
'I’ve been to Asia a few times and every time it’s a pleasure for me to be there and to play in front of the fans. We always have full stadiums and they give us a lot of support and show us that they love football.
'So we always try our best to give something back to them. The love they give to us, we try to give it back.'
While the 30-year-old may not have been to Asia with the Blues before, he will be in familiar surroundings when we walk out at the Bird's Nest Stadium in Beijing, where we face Arsenal on 22 July, and Singapore's National Stadium, for games against Bayern Munich on 25 July and Inter Milan four days later.
He was part of the Brazil squad, alongside Chelsea team-mate Willian, which played friendlies in both venues in quick succession three years ago, emerging as 2-0 winners over fierce rivals Argentina in China before travelling to Singapore to beat Japan 4-0.
'It was nice to play there for Brazil in 2014, although we didn’t have too much time to enjoy the cities and to learn more about their culture,’ added the centre-back.
'What I did enjoy was seeing the stadium and the fans, because it is good to see that on the other side of the world, people also love you.
'I was born in Brazil in a different culture and where many things are different [from Asia], but when I arrived there, there were so many people who wanted to take pictures with us, to get our autographs and to be with us, and that touched my heart.
'That’s why I play football, I play for them.'
